Sara Sternberger Makes Estate Gift in Gratitude for Her MU Experience

Sara Sternberger

“My husband and I feel very fortunate to have had the educational opportunities that were provided to us and the career success that we’ve had over the years. There was never any doubt in our minds that we’d be giving back!” said Sara Sternberger, MBA, MHA ’86, third generation Tiger, and MU Legacy Society member.

After graduating from Mizzou, Sara worked in the health care and nonprofit sectors—holding significant executive leadership positions. Her secret? “Fortunately, I’ve been successful and have been open to criticism and listening. Listening is how you succeed. I believe that being a servant-leader is what it takes to be a successful executive overall.”

In addition to her course work, Sara found that networking with alumni and internships providing real-world experiences especially helped to prepare her for life after Mizzou. Her advice to current Mizzou students: “Be open. Say ‘yes.’ Show your colleagues and bosses what you can do and are willing to do. Initiative is an indicator of leadership.”

For those thinking about including Mizzou in their estate plans, Sara is encouraging. “If we can do it, you can do it! Our upbringing shaped our values, and we always wanted to give back to the institutions that gave so much to us! Outside of my family and career, Mizzou has had an oversized impact on me and who I am today. I’m grateful.”
